Apprentice: Tom Boyes

        Tom R Boyes, Knifemaker

I met Ron at a gun show is 1999 and after talking he agreed to let me tour his shop.I told him I was interested in making knives and was an avid collector as well. The shop was small but well equipt. He told me what was expected if I was to learn and I agreed. It was one of the hardest things I ever imagined, He said “I can teach you how to make knives, but I can’t show you how to make knives” It took a while to figure that one out, but it sunk in. I must tell you Ron was very patient with me, besides keeping up with his full time job and crafting his own knives he allowed time for me as well. After three long years I struck out on my own and now I have a fully equipt shop of my own in Allenton, Wi.

Ron was a huge part of my success and I always tell everyone he was the one who taught me. I still go see him some 8 years later for advice and help now and again. I have been featured in Blade magazine and also found a place in Knives Annual. I attend the Badger knife shows, at times the Chicago shows and also the local gun shows. I owe Ron a lot for taking time and effort to be patient and teach me.

I plan on future trips to Ron’s shop to start learning how to make folders, as I want to continue to upgrade my skills. So you see there is always something new to learn, a time to learn and keep learning. I also plan on taking engraving courses and right now am trying my hand at leatherwork, notice I said trying.

Take a look at my knives, if you have an interest in them I can be reached at 262-391-2172

Thank you Ron for putting me on you’re website.
